As geeks, we can sit back and enjoy things seeing them through a clear lens, uninfluenced by the mainstream. The alternatives to swing dancing often involve saturating all the human senses, (which, with time just desensitizes them, and we get bored!) where swing dancing itself re-tunes them to enjoy finer subtle ones. I think we geeks on a level, quickly discover swing dancing to be fulfilling for that reason.

Mike, if it doesn't count as exercise you're doing too much teaching and not enough dancing! Enjoy yourself more!

Fair enough. I only know about a half-dozen salsa moves, so I don't really have enough experience with either the dance or the scene to offer an informed opinion. I've chatted with a handful of women in swing who are refugees of salsa, but of course, they're going to be predisposed to have a negative opinion---it's just as possible that people go the other direction, too. (My main reason for not getting into salsa is that I simply don't enjoy the music as much.)

I've never had patience for the gym. The apparent rewards seem so far off and difficult to even quantify... dancing is full of immediate incentives.

Man, I agree wholeheartedly with you in everything but the salsa critic... I am one of the salsa obsessed geeks that go to congresses, dance always at Friday and Saturday (and sometimes Tuesdays), besides classes, and really do not agree with the creepiness you talk about... Sure - sometimes there are some guys that show up just to pick up chicks - but they don't last long... :-)

Other than that, I think social dancing is really a great way to exercise, to make new friends, to relax, to finally be able to move a little after a 9to5 computer job... So I wouldn't trade it for nothing - some work colleagues are always trying to convince me to go to a gym, but I know myself - I would grow tired of it after the first month :-)
