I will be in Seattle in September, and back in Waterloo next January.

A Different Itinerary

April 10th, 2007

When I was in California a few weeks ago, Delta had oversold my return flight, so I ended up with a generous coupon to be redeemed for future Delta travel. Thus, in the process of checking out flights, I paid special attention to the offerings from Delta. Why not get my return trip to Toronto as a freebie, if I could?

Well, it turned out that the best Delta could do was around $250, so I’m saving my coupon for the future. But as I browsed the options Delta proposed to me, one in particular stood out as kind of bizarre. Surreal, you might even say. I guess these kinds of things happen when you have a computer proposing itineraries:

Delta Surreal

The funniest thing though, was that I even briefly considered that trip. It’s still an hour shorter than the Maple Leaf Line, and I’ve never actually been to Florida before.

Really, I don’t think the best way to enjoy a city is for an hour at an time inside its main airport terminal. But still, it would be pretty funny to be able to say I traveled from New York to Toronto via West Palm Beach, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia. And as I say to anyone I’m lost with, the getting there is as much an adventure as the destination, so long as you can turn it into a good story later.

Discussion

  1. $250’s not too bad for a flight of that distance. (Assuming that’s the price post-fees, that is)

  2. Expedia found me a flight with Continental for $144, including all taxes and fees, so that’s what I went with.

  3. I typically pay $250 with taxes and fees to get from Toronto to Vancouver (or sometimes all the way to Campbell River) so that’s a ridiculous price for New York to Toronto, a flight which likely has even more traffic and is a shorter distance.

  4. That’s not the worst itinerary I’ve seen. The last time I tried to travel from London ON, to Vancouver BC I ended up with the following:

    London -> Winnipeg -> Regina -> Calgary -> Vancouver

    And no, they weren’t through flights, every single one was a connection :D I’ve also been offered by the computer a (cheaper!) ticket to fly from Vancouver to LA and then back to Seattle, as opposed to just going straight there…

  5. Wouldn’t it have been easier and cheaper to just drive to Seattle, Jerry? Or just take the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria, then on to Seattle?
