Midterms

November 1st, 2006

ArtsThey say Engineering school is hard. But there’s a point at which you simply become numbed to it… when 78 of 99 students get a midterm mark below 50%, it’s not hard to start fantasizing about a long and successful career as a line worker screwing lids on toothpaste tubes.

And apologies to arts majors for the image. We think it’s funny. (They think it’s funny at UBC, too…)

Discussion

  1. The thing to remember when getting your marks back is that you’re the only one that’s going to know what those marks were after you graduate.

(Non Co-op) employers are going to be looking at: 1. Did you graduate? (shows the ability to follow through with things you start) 2. Which program did you take? (theoretically implies knowledge, though they’ll assume they need to teach you lots anyways) 3. What kind of a reputation does the program have? (Implies how hard/easy it was to achieve #1).

From all of my alumni friends (many in UW Engineering), none have ever said that their marks mattered unless they were going on to do more academic work (Masters/Doctorate)… Academia is very different from the “real” world :).

Last thing to remember is that the prof can’t fail 78 of 99 students or he’ll lose his/her job. :)

  2. Yeah, we’re all sort of broadly aware of that. The particular case here is an interesting one, since the evaluation in question was actually quite practical, and not particularly difficult—we were simply unprepared. Now that I have a cushy job lined up, I think the solution is to just hire a tutor to explain it all to me. Some can go that route, some can get it out of the book; there’s a point where you have to stop relying on the prof.

  3. Sociology isn’t Arts…I do much less work than an Arts student. They have to actually create material and do readings and such. I go to classes occasionally and have four days off a week. It says a lot about a faculty when a 60% average is all you need for Honours…

  4. Sounds like you’re really living the hard knock life, there, Alex.
