I am engaged to the beautiful and wonderful Tara Cleaver!

Only in Waterloo

September 20th, 2006 2

Last night, in Waterloo, there were two parties.

The first was thrown by a frat, and was bone dry. The second was thrown by a local employer and featured a good deal more beer and liquor than could have been safely consumed by the persons present.

Not that all Waterloo frat parties are dry, or that most employer recruitment sessions *aren’t*, but it’s a little amusing to observe the contrast between students *now* and the students who graduated ten years ago to start companies in town.

Discussion

  1. You could have at least given them a plug.

They also gave us food…and rented out a pub. Beats ATI’s info session last term by far.

  2. Well, I realise that they they’re working hard to cultivate a “party employer” reputation within the school, but I wasn’t sure if they wanted that broadcast online. Since you’ve linked them, though, there it is.

As we discussed at the party itself though, it really is a pretty modest financial outlay—between booze and the venue, probably less than a thousand dollars for the evening—given that they’re about to hire someone they’ll pay $12000+ to over the course of four months. It’s worth it to drum up excitement about the employer so that they get lots of enthusiastic applicants. (And don’t mistake my dryness for cynicism; they really does seem like an excellent company, I’m just pushing for more of a “hard” engineering job this term…)
