Veronica in the Windshield

First [Firefly](http://www.fireflywiki.org/), then [Wonderfalls](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderfalls), and now… [Veronica Mars](http://www.marsinvestigations.net/). Finally I’m hooked on a show that hasn’t been axed by FOX!

Nancy Drew, with a murder, a rape, a missing parent, and a corrupt sheriff. And the most hard-boiled 17-year-old you’re ever likely to meet.

Intrigue, mystery, romance. Like the O.C., but with a zoom lens, a pitbull, a powerbook, and a tazer. (Don’t believe me? [Whedon loves it too...](http://whedonesque.com/comments/7502))

So I did have a whole tirade about downloading TV. But what I didn’t [say before](http://uwmike.com/articles/2005/10/22/tv-on-demand) was covered better anyways by [Thomas Hawk](http://thomashawk.com/2005/11/television-executives-stilll-dont-get.html). And the rest ended up as a comment on [a piece by Jeff](http://jeffaho.com/archives/content/#comment-110).

I just think it’s funny that with 600 channels of cable, we can’t get UPN in Waterloo. Yet my house in T.O. with its ancient—yet south-pointing—antenna *can* pick it up. Ah well, [steal now](http://www.mininova.org/sub/121), [buy it with the Christmas money](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A59PMO/102-6209229-7498534?v=glance&n=130).

  1. Mike – you like this show so much, you obviously forgot to mention something in comparing it to Nancy Drew: the lack of awfulness.

  2. My familiarity with Nancy Drew is limited to Wikipedia and the mounds of references elsewhere in pop culture. So perhaps it’s unfair to draw a comparison when I’m not fully educated.

Nonetheless, it seems clear that *Drew* is based around tea party scandals more than any sort of real crimes that seriously impact the lives of the characters. The brilliance of *Mars* is how, in solving other peoples problems, she gradually assembles enough pieces of the puzzle to reconstruct the two crimes that destroyed her old life: her friend’s murder and her own rape. Some of the week-to-week mysteries are better than others, but the finale is just amazing.
