Two Nifties

November 9th, 2005 3

So I’m back online again.

The (otherwise super-terrific) folks at Dreamhost sprung a surprise Rails [1.0rc4](http://weblog.rubyonrails.com/articles/2005/11/07/rails-1-0-rc4-0-14-3-its-the-final-countdown) upgrade on us, and I was *definitely* not prepared for it.

At any rate, I’ve got little else to say, so I’ll just share two little experiments with you: The [Google Maps Autolinker](http://sandbox.mikepurvis.com/maps/links/) and the [Ajaxian File Browser](http://sandbox.mikepurvis.com/php/files/).

Neither of them is perfect, but 24 hours offline wasn’t perfect either.

Discussion

  1. I’ve never used Rails, but I’ve considered it. Rails upgrades aren’t backward-compatible?

  2. Well, it’s still pre-1.0 software, of course. But the thing that makes it all more confusing is that it’s not just the Rails version that matters, it’s the Ruby version and for me, the Typo version.

The developers have acknowledged the problem, however: the new version contains [a version report tool](http://bumble.jamisbuck.org/6).

  3. Yeah, there’s a lot going on there! Thanks for the feedback, and the link.
