I'm in Waterloo at the moment, and next available to work in September 2008.

Spyware Infestation

February 17th, 2005

I’m a licensed owner of Windows XP. It didn’t come with my box, I actually went to a store and bought it. At the time, I was developing a project in Visual Basic, and complete compatibility with XP was one of the design requirements. Win98 and I had good times, but the relationship just couldn’t last.

In a strange turn of fate, it’s now months later, and I’m just launched into an offshoot of that original project, requiring… Windows XP.

At work, however, I’ve been happily using Xandros for several months, and found the transition extremely easy. As I wrote previously, none of the applications that I depend on depend on Windows.

I do not dislike Microsoft. Absolutely not. Like many things that I do, switching my primary desktop to Gentoo will be at least partly just for the sake of curiousity.

Finding BargainBuddy on my system was simply the last straw. Not only was it there, it was interfering with my network connection. Spyware spying on me is bad enough, but chopping off my intenet? Not cool.

Of course, I still have this project which requires Visual Basic, but having all of my ‘regular computing’ on a separate partition from that is probably good for me psychologically, anyways, in a work-before-play sort of way.

Update: I should update by saying the infection was Bropia.N, and clicking the PIF link was my own dumb fault. Oh, well, Ad-Aware and AVG seem to have cleaned up the mess.
