I'm in Waterloo at the moment, and next available to work in September 2008.

Dialling In

December 20th, 2004

One of the guys in my class at Waterloo had an amusing anecdote about dialup internet: For the eighteen years of his life that he lived in Calgary, he was on dialup, begging his parents to get some kind of broadband. When he left to come to school, he bought his parents a webcam so they could engage in videochat with him.

Well, within a week of his having left home, they realised what a laggy experience videochat was on dialup, so they promptly ordered Highspeed.

My parents did no such thing, so my ability to update this site and participate on the class forum has been slightly hindered.

Ah well, it’s a good excuse to do some reading. I blitzed through The Code Book, recommended me by a classmate and which I now wholeheartedly recommend.

  1. I’m glad you enjoyed the book. Cryptography is a fascinating topic and the history is entertaining as well. I have dial up back here at home…painful…just painful. I guess it isn’t much worse than Resnet though…

  2. Yeah, thanks for the recommendation on that.

Actually, in a hilariously cruel twist of fate, we’re actually getting highspeed here in Toronto shortly as well. Our relatives are sick and tired of not being able to get through here by telephone, so that helped get the machinery in motion.
